Stem cells are the body’s raw material: cells that can renew themselves and develop into more specialised cells. In Dubai and across the UAE, stem cell treatment is regulated medical care, and only some uses are established. This guide explains what stem cells are, what is proven, and what to check before you pay.
This is general information, not medical advice. Clinical questions belong with a licensed doctor. In an emergency, call 998 for an ambulance.
What are stem cells?
Most cells in the body do one job. Stem cells are different in two ways: they can make copies of themselves, and they can turn into other cell types. The main groups you will hear about are:
- Blood-forming stem cells: found in bone marrow and umbilical cord blood. They produce blood and immune cells.
- Mesenchymal and adipose-derived cells: taken from sources such as fat tissue. Many are being studied, and many marketed uses are still unproven.
- Embryonic and induced pluripotent cells: able to form many cell types. These are mainly used in research.
What is established, and what is still being tested
The clearest established use is blood-forming stem cell transplantation for selected blood cancers, immune disorders and inherited blood diseases.
Many other uses are promoted, including arthritis, chronic pain, anti-ageing, autism and neurological recovery. Most of these remain investigational or unapproved. The International Society for Stem Cell Research says treatments should be tested for safety and effectiveness in regulated clinical trials before approval.
Who regulates stem cell treatment in the UAE?
- Dubai: the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licenses facilities and professionals. It has published a standard for autologous adipose-derived stem cells and stromal vascular fraction, meaning cells taken from the patient’s own fat. Facilities need written approval for the facility and its professionals.
- Abu Dhabi and Al Ain: the Department of Health (DOH) sets a standard for stem cell, cell-based and tissue-based therapies. In 2023 it appointed the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center as a centre of excellence in stem cell transplantation.
- Other emirates: the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) is the relevant regulator. Cabinet Resolution No. 6 of 2020 covers centres handling cord blood, stem cells and other nucleated cells.
Five checks before you pay for treatment
- Facility licence: it should show the exact service, issued by DHA, DOH or MOHAP.
- Doctor’s licence and specialty: these should match your condition. In Dubai, verify through DHA’s Sheryan.
- Written diagnosis: a note explaining why cell therapy is being offered to you.
- Cell documentation: the source, processing, sterility testing and storage of the cells.
- Consent form: known risks, uncertain benefits, follow-up and how to complain.
Ask directly whether the treatment is standard care, an approved trial or a paid experimental procedure. Get any insurance decision and the itemised quote in writing.
Warning signs
- Promised cure rates or guaranteed results.
- Pressure to pay immediately.
- Discouraging you from getting a second opinion.
- Imported cells with no documents.
- A trial listing presented as an approved treatment.
For clinics: answering stem cell enquiries responsibly
Patients often ask about stem cells on WhatsApp first. Replies need care: no promised outcomes, no diagnosis in chat, and clinical questions passed to a doctor. Check the health advertising rules that apply to your facility before you publish any claim.
How Dub Ai helps clinics
Dub Ai is an AI team run from WhatsApp. For clinics, it answers general enquiries in Arabic and English, sends medical questions directly to your team, and takes appointment requests for your staff to confirm. It also follows up with patients who asked and went quiet, runs Meta campaigns that bring enquiries to WhatsApp, and prepares content for your team to review before it goes out.
Frequently asked questions
Is stem cell therapy legal in Dubai?
Stem cell services in Dubai are regulated by the Dubai Health Authority, and facilities and professionals need the right approvals. That does not mean every treatment on offer is approved or proven. Ask to see the licence for the exact service, and confirm it with DHA through Sheryan.
Can stem cells cure arthritis or reverse ageing?
These uses are widely promoted, but most remain investigational or unapproved. Be careful with any clinic promising a cure or a set result. Speak to a licensed specialist in your condition, ask for the evidence in writing, and consider a second opinion before you pay.
