Click to WhatsApp ads are Facebook and Instagram ads with a button that opens a chat with your business on WhatsApp, instead of sending people to a website or a form. For UAE businesses whose customers already prefer to message, they can turn interest into a real conversation within seconds. They only pay off, though, if someone replies quickly and knows how to move the chat towards a sale.
This guide explains how the ads work, when they suit your business, what to prepare on the WhatsApp side before you spend, and how to measure results beyond “conversations started”.

How click-to-WhatsApp ads work
Meta calls the format ads that click to WhatsApp. According to WhatsApp Business, these ads can run on Facebook and Instagram placements, including News Feed, Stories and Marketplace, and open a chat with your business when tapped.
The journey looks like this:
- A person sees your ad on Facebook or Instagram.
- They tap “Send message” (or a similar button).
- WhatsApp opens with a chat to your business and, usually, a pre-filled message such as “Hi, I’m interested in this offer.”
- They send it, and your team or assistant replies.
From that point, it is a normal WhatsApp conversation. The ad’s job ends once the customer sends the first message. Everything after that depends on your reply.
WhatsApp Business lists the formats you can use, including image, video and carousel ads, and the usual Meta targeting options such as location, age and gender, and custom or lookalike audiences.
When they suit your business
Chat ads work well when customers usually have a question before they buy. Typical examples in the UAE:
- Services with options: salons, cleaning, car services, training courses.
- Considered purchases: furniture, electronics, made-to-order cakes.
- Clinics: patients asking about a service or requesting an appointment that the clinic team confirms.
- Local shops: checking stock, delivery areas or opening hours.
They suit you less when the product is simple and the purchase is impulsive. A direct link to a product page may convert better there. If you are weighing chat ads against Meta’s instant forms, read our comparison of lead forms and WhatsApp ads.
| Good fit | Weaker fit |
|---|---|
| Customers ask questions before buying | Low-priced, self-explanatory products |
| You can reply within minutes | Nobody can answer chats for hours |
| Price depends on options or location | A fixed price on a product page says it all |
What to prepare before launch
Most of the work that decides whether chat ads pay off happens before the first dirham is spent.
Accounts and connections
- A Facebook Page and an Instagram account linked to your Meta business portfolio.
- Your WhatsApp business number connected to the Page. Our help article on connecting WhatsApp to your Page for ads walks through it.
- A payment method in Ads Manager.
Your WhatsApp side
- A pre-filled message and welcome reply for each offer (see our guide to ad chat welcome messages).
- Answers to the five or six questions every ad chat asks: price range, location, delivery, timing, availability.
- A clear next step: a basket and payment link, a visit, or an appointment request your team confirms.
- A follow-up plan for people who go quiet.
Creative and copy
Short reels and clear images that show the offer and end with a reason to message. Our guide to WhatsApp ad creative has examples, and the Arabic and English ads guide covers language targeting.

Replying fast to ad chats
Someone who taps your ad is interested right now. If the reply comes hours later, they may have messaged a competitor or simply moved on. Research published in Harvard Business Review, “The Short Life of Online Sales Leads”, found that most companies were not responding to online enquiries nearly fast enough. Our article on why WhatsApp ad leads go cold covers the usual causes.
A good first reply:
- arrives within minutes, day or night;
- answers the question in the pre-filled message;
- asks one simple question to move forward.
Example: “Hi, thanks for your message. The deep-clean package for a 2-bedroom flat takes about 5 hours. Which area are you in, and which day suits you?”
How Meta charges for ad chats
As of October 2026, Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page says Meta charges per delivered message from businesses to users, and does not charge for messages from users to businesses. When a person messages you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad on the Android or iOS app and you reply within the customer service window, Meta opens an “entry point” window that can stay open for up to 7 days, during which it does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages. Messages powered by Meta’s own Business Agent remain charged. Rates and rules change, so check Meta’s page before you budget.
Measuring results
By default, Ads Manager shows how many conversations your ads started. That tells you about interest, not sales. WhatsApp Business notes that results beyond the conversation can be measured with the Meta pixel, the Conversions API or offline conversions.
A simple weekly routine:
- Count conversations started per ad set.
- Count how many became qualified leads.
- Count how many became sales or confirmed appointments.
- Compare cost per sale, not just cost per conversation.
Our guide to tracking sales from WhatsApp ads explains how to send those outcomes back to Meta. And when you do change a campaign, batch your edits: changes can restart Meta’s learning phase, as explained in our learning phase guide.
Clear tracking matters. In our Dr Saba Almarush case study, tracking was rebuilt so WhatsApp, phone and form enquiries could be measured channel by channel. You can read more examples on our case studies page.
How Dub Ai helps
Through our Meta ads management service, the Dub Ai team plans, sets up and manages your Facebook and Instagram campaigns, with WhatsApp as the destination. Spend, clicks and conversions are reported to you on WhatsApp, and you can pause or resume a campaign or adjust a daily budget by message, with confirmation before any change. Ad spend is paid directly to Meta.
On the chat side, the AI sales agent replies to ad enquiries on your WhatsApp number day and night, in the customer’s language, using your catalogue and FAQs, and hands the chat to your team when a person is needed. Every enquiry lands in the same leads list, so you can see which campaigns bring real conversations. More detail is in our help article on Meta ads.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the WhatsApp API for these ads?
Not to run them. Ads that click to WhatsApp can open a chat with a number on the WhatsApp Business app or on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API). The API becomes useful when several people or an AI assistant need to answer from one number, and when you want ad chats recorded as leads automatically. Meta’s per-message pricing applies to the API.
Can the ad open an Arabic chat?
Yes. You write the pre-filled message yourself, so an Arabic ad can open the chat with an Arabic message. It is usually clearer to run separate ad sets or ads for Arabic and English, each with its own pre-filled text, and to make sure whoever replies, person or assistant, answers in the same language the customer used.
How are messages from ads charged?
As of October 2026, Meta does not charge for messages customers send you. If a customer messages from a click-to-WhatsApp ad on the mobile app and you reply within the customer service window, Meta opens a window of up to 7 days in which most business messages are not charged. Ad spend itself is billed separately by Meta. Check Meta’s pricing page for current rules.
